Strain & Sprain

Symptoms:

  • Intense pain
  • Swelling
  • Limited mobility

First aid:

  • Avoid activities that cause pain and seek medical attention 112/166
  • Apply cold patches for 20 to 30 minutes per application
  • Apply a compression wrap after an acute ankle sprain or strain to promote comfort after injury

Dislocation

Symptoms:

  • Distortion
  • Inability to move
  • Sudden pain
  • Sudden swelling

First aid:

  • Get medical help as soon as you can 112/166
  • Don't move the joint
  • Apply cold patcheson the injured joint

Fracture

Symptoms:

  • Obvious Deformity
  • Swelling
  • Severe pain with or without movement
  • Bruising
  • Protruding bone

First aid:

  • If a fracture is associated with an open wound and severe bleeding, First aid for Life-Threatening Bleeding should be followed
  • If a fractured extremity is blue, purple, or pale, seek medical help immediately 112/166
  • Splinting an injured extremity in the position found should be done by medical staff
  • Cover an open wound with a clean dressing to lower the risk for further contamination and infection
